Royal College of General Practitioners Visit

17 December 2012

On Friday the 14th of December 3 young people from Edinburgh Young Carers presented to a group of lovely supporters from the Royal College of General Practitioners.

They presented on a day in the life of a young carer to give the people from the college a real example of what tasks and activities a day in the life of one of our very proud young carers may be made up of. We were made very welcome and the generous people of the RCGP had piled a long table high with Christmas gifts for Edinburgh Young Carers Young People.

We would like to thank everyone involved with this at RCGP for the wonderful donation and secondly thank them for giving us the opportunity to present our story to such a warm audience. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you again in the New Year!!!

Educational Resource Pack for Schools

25 May 2012

Edinburgh Young Carers Project are launching their Educational Resource Pack for schools on:

Weds 30th May at Edinburgh City Chambers from 9:30am – 1pm

The schools resource packs are designed to complement the Education (Additional support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 that broadens the range of children and young people who can access additional support for learning.

One such group is Young Carers, who often remain hidden because of the diverse and complex nature of their caring role. The school resource pack aims to raise awareness of young carers in schools.

Young Carers have worked closely with Edinburgh schools to create the resource pack in accordance with the Health and Wellbeing outcomes in the Curriculum for Excellence.

The resource pack consists of lesson plans that are interactive and motivating. All lessons are tailored to suit different learning styles and outcomes. The resource packs will increase pupil’s awareness and understanding of disabilities, illness and caring responsibilities.

This improved understanding will result in a more supportive school environment for young carers and a reduction in the level of isolation and loneliness that so often affects them.  The aim of the pack is to raise awareness of the needs of young carers with staff and pupils.

The pack informs staff of the signs that can indicate that a young person is a young carer.

Christmas Thanks!

2 February 2012

We were invited to attend the launch of the book tree at Blackwells book shop in South Bridge on 24th November,2011.
This is an initiative which we have been involved in for the past 3 years. Customers who purchase a book for themselves can also buy an additional book which is then donated to previously chosen charities at Christmas.

This year we received 68 books for distribution to young carers in Edinburgh.

We are as ever very grateful to Carolyne and her team for their hard work and generosity and also to the individuals who donated the books

We also received 37 gifts from The Royal College of General Practitioners and would like to thank Diane for organising this and send a big thank you to everyone who donated a gift.

We received a number of gifts from the C7 church in Edinburgh and would like to thank Lorna for arranging this and especially for dropping off all the gifts to the office.
