Peer Mentoring

What's Peer Mentoring?
Peer mentoring is about young people helping each other, giving time
and support to make a relationship, try new experiences and grow in
confidence.
EYCP offers, as a pilot project, the opportunity for a young
carer to be matched with a young mentor. We recruited within EYCP and
posted
adverts with Volunteer Edinburgh and local colleges and
universities. We offer six introductory training sessions covering:
Listening skills, basic Child Protection, Boundaries, Beginnings and
Endings and Mentoring Skills. We match young people with the use of a
"matchmaker" form: both
parties are asked simple questions about what they like and what they
don't like! e.g.
What sort of people do you like? - please circle

The aim of the project is to offer some
of our young carers a different opportunity from group work. An
opportunity to allow a young carer to recognise their own needs. It is
a one-to-one informal, but boundaried, relationship with another young
person. Goals are agreed, which can be quite simply to have some fun or
more specific, like learning to travel around Edinburgh more
independently. The basis of the match is to have some time away from
caring, to be, first and foremost, a young person enjoying
the things that young people enjoy and along the way, achieving
something for themself.
